Can you please tell me how Authors can add books and edit them from the front end? i don't see a place on the backend where I can give them permission to do this with the library.

Hi Donna,
it's not possible insert or edit books from the front-end. This is a feature that could be included in next version. At time you can only insert or edit the book from back-end.
